Tapestry Dance Company Academy Studios

Tapestry Dance Company is a nationally recognized and award winning multi-form dance company. When faced with the demolition of their long time studio, the company co-founder Acia Gray and Ellen Hunt worked for more than a year to find a suitable new studio space for company rehearsals and the Academy classrooms. An old warehouse that had last been used as housing for Katrina refugees was available, and the transformation of the space began. The warehouse had originally been built as racquetball courts, and most of the original maple wood floors were still intact. The large 5,000 s.f. open space was converted into 5 studios, some appropriate for small classes and one specifically for large groups. Soundproofing the studios, as well as giving them a great sound system adds to the enjoyment of the spaces. The legendary tap dancer Dianne Walker is quoted as saying “These's are the best floors I have ever danced on! The best in the world.”

In addition all the studios are fully ADA compliant, prompting Ms. Hunt to contribute an article to the AIA interiors committee on the appropriateness of the ADA in sports and other facilities.
