807 Rio Grande Khabele School Expansion

The Khabele School is a small, holistic, private middle and high school in downtown Austin. Located beneath ancient live oak trees, the school occupies two large Victorian era houses and several smaller building. When an adjacent building on their block became available, the Khabele School expanded again. The 807 building has two large classrooms for art and science, as well as office, storage and accessory spaces. The design challenge was to unify three different buildings that had been joined at some time in the past into one cohesive school building. Opening up the building during demolition revealed original construction that dated from before WWI until the 1970’s. The feeling of light and spaciousness that the original Victorian era buildings have was brought into the new construction in an effort to unify the campus.
