Massachusetts Mills

Set at the meeting of the Merrimac and Concord Rivers in Lowell, Massachusetts, Mass Mills is the largest exiting historical mill complex in the United States, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The restoration of the exterior of the building and the adaptive re-use of the interior as multi-family apartment units was a labor of love. Underneath the mill buildings are operating flywheels that generate electricity and send it back to the grid. Beneath the parking areas are penstocks that bring water from canals to the wheels. All of these elements are essential to the historical essence of the mill complex and were unchanged during the renovation/restoration.

The exterior restoration included repair of brick and mortar and the replacement of damaged brick with salvage bricks. Historical windows were removed and repaired, and replaced into the original openings. The original gutters and downspouts were retained and repaired or replaced as necessary. Inside the buildings apartments were designed that were suitable for several family groups, from singles, large families, roommates and handicapped accessible units. Many units have views of the rivers, or downtown Lowell, some have loft spaces and very high ceilings. Phases I and II are complete.
